I'm an award-winning writer and editor with a broad set of skills across multiple genres of news. Here, you'll find examples of my work at The Sporting News and MLB.com. Though most of my focus has been on baseball since 2015, I've managed other writers and producers to shape coverage of the NFL, NBA, college sports and more.

Whether writing a long-form feature, penning a column on a trending topic or guiding another writer through a story, I've earned a reputation for high-quality work that inspires enthusiasm and ambition.

Original enterprise

I love telling untold stories, especially when I'm able to dig deep into a subject and produce a long-form piece that serves as the premiere and definitive telling of a particular story. Throwback/nostalgia stories are my favorite. These are all 100 percent originals.

Thought leadership

When I weigh in with an opinion on a sports issue, whether light or serious, I try to offer a unique perspective, or an angle that others haven't considered. The goal is to make readers think. Some examples from baseball and beyond:

Analysis

The goal when I write an analysis piece is similar to when I write an opinion column: to ask readers to think about something in a way they haven't before. Sometimes, it's an untapped angle that requires a deep dive. Other times, it's just pointing out something they might have missed. Some examples:

Short-term features

These obviously don't take as long as the deep-dive enterprise stuff, but they're often just as rewarding to write and still offer readers a nice surprise. The goal is still to find undiscussed or under-discussed angles.

Trending/breaking news

Whatever your approach to trending and breaking news, you’ve got to find ways to stand out — a unique spin, quick enterprise, commentary or even some satire. Here are some examples of how I’ve handled trending/breaking news as a writer.

Misc. baseball/sports fun

Sometimes columns don't really fit into a category, but they're still fun to write and are generally relatable among fans. Here are a few examples:

Stories and projects I've guided and/or edited

Though writing is always a blast, I have lots of experience planning and overseeing content production. But finding ways to stand out is still the goal, whether with daily stories or enterprise projects, so I encourage my writers and contributors to pursue unique angles and untold stories whenever possible. Here's a sampling of stories I've guided and/or edited:

'By the Numbers'

The Sporting News has an ongoing video series called "By the Numbers," which digs deep into athletes' more interesting stats to paint a fuller picture of their abilities. I did one on two-way MLB star Shohei Ohtani in June 2021, then another one after he was unanimously named AL MVP.

'Opening Day' video series

During the 2019 MLB season, I co-hosted an SN video series called "Opening Day," in which we opened boxes of baseball cards and gave away the best cards to viewers. Here are a couple of episodes.

Shohei Ohtani 2021: The Story of the Greatest Season in Sports History

As part of SN's 50 Greatest Seasons in Sports History project, I wrote, narrated and scored a comic book-style video on Shohei Ohtani's incredible 2021 season, which we judged as the greatest individual season of all time.

Sporting News MLB awards

Each year since 1936, The Sporting News has polled MLB players, managers and executives to determine their end-of-year superlatives. The awards carry special meaning to the recipients because they're voted on by their peers. During my tenure as senior MLB editor, it was my job to coordinate the polling and tabulate the results. Here's the video I wrote and narrated for the 2022 awards.

'Weird Baseball'

This is a prototype video I made on my own for a proposed series that would go semi-deep on weird moments or games in baseball history. I wrote, narrated and scored it. I hope to make it a fully produced series in my next baseball-media job.
